Constructed in 1965, the Astrodome became the first covered baseball park, built to combat Houston's hot and humid summers with an air-conditioned facility. It cost US$35 million to build and was a major engineering feat. But because catching fly balls became impossible against the clear skylights in the dome's roof, the roof was painted to block the light. But with not enough natural light filtering through, the grass died. This lead to the invention of plastic grass called Astroturf. This became a temporary solution, as the surface was not a favourite for baseball players. While home to the Astros baseball team since 1965, the team moved to a new field in 2000 that offered a retractable-roof for air-conditioned comfort and natural grass.
